Perugia is known for the underground lairs beneath the city. There are escalators that lead to the remnants of the Rocca Paolini, a sixteenth century fortress. Below the fortress are a number of medieval streets that are covered in brick ceilings. It is a great sight to see. Located by the fortress is the Porta Marzia, an Etruscan city gate built at some point during the third century and eventually incorporated into the building of the city walls.
