Perugia is the capital city of the Italian region of Umbria. It has a population of 168,066 inhabitants (9/2010) and is 449.92 square kilometers in size. It is a major center for medieval art and is well known as a major chocolates producer.
Perugia is known for the underground lairs beneath the city. There are escalators that lead to the remnants of the Rocca Paolini, a sixteenth century fortress. Below the fortress are a number of medieval streets that are covered in brick ceilings. It is a great sight to see. Located by the fortress is the Porta Marzia, an Etruscan city gate built at some point during the third century and eventually incorporated into the building of the city walls.
Perogia is the home to the annual Umbria Jazz Festival. This festival takes place in July and attracts renowned jazz performers from all around the world. The jazz concerts take place right in the center of the city.
