The town of Bergamo is located in the Lombardy region of Italy, approximately 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Milan. There are 120,649 inhabitants (12/2010) in Bergamo and the town is 39.6 square kilometers in size. The town is located in the foothills of the magnificent Alps and is known for its beauty, numerous artistic treasures, as well as its very enchanting medieval atmosphere.
Bergamo has two centers – “Citta alta,” (upper city) which rests on a hilltop and surrounded by defensive walls built in the seventeenth century, and “Citta bassa,” (lower city) which is on the base of the hill. These two centers are connected by footpaths as well as a funicular (cable car). There is much to see in both areas, including the Piazza Vecchia, which is the heart of Bergamo’s old town and the Accademia Carrara, which houses some of the most important collections of Baroque, Renaissance, and medieval art in all of northern Italy.
Bergamo is served by the Bergamo Airport (BGY), which is also known as the Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport. It is located 3.7 kilometers from the town and is the fourth busiest airport in Italy. Some of the airlines serviced by the airport include Alitalia, Ryanair, and Bell Air.
