The town of Gorizia is located along the northeast border of Italy in the region of Friuli Venezia Guilia. Because it is right on the border with Slovenia, it is common to hear both Italian and Slovenian spoken by those who live here. It has 35,980 inhabitants (4/2009) and is 41 square kilometers in size.
Because the city sits right on the border, there are a number of border crossings in Gorizia that enters into the adjacent Slovenian town of Nova Gorica. Since Slovenia joined the Schengen Agreement in 2007, passage along the border has been made quite simple.
The Castle of Gorizia is one of the main attractions to see in the town. Its walls date back to the middle ages and the castle was once the seat of the judiciary and administrative power in the country. Piazza della Vittoria, or Victory Square is at the main point of the town. There is a large fountain in the middle and it is surrounded by small boutiques, restaurants, and cafes.
The airport closest to Gorizia is the Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport (TRS), also known as the Ronchi dei Legionari Airport or the Trieste Airport. It is located 16 kilometers from the town and handles a small number of airlines, including Alitalia, Belle Air, Lufthansa Regional, and Ryaniar.
