It boasts a population of 197,250 (4/2011) and is 90.7 square kilometers in size. Brescia is known throughout Italy as the “Lioness of Italy” due to a ten day popular uprising against Austrian rule in 1849.
Brescia is known for a few local specialties when it comes to cuisine. This includes Casonsei, which is homemade tortellini filled with beef that is served with “burro versato,” sage, and parmigiano.
Brescia’s Piazza della Loggia is one of the foremost examples of a Renaissance piazza. Duomo Vecchio, also known as La Rotonda, is a Romanesque church known for its circular shape. The monastery of San Salvatore is a great example of High Middle Ages architecture throughout northern Italy.
