Pisa is a city located in the Italian region of Tuscany. It has 88,332 inhabitants (11/2010) and is 185 square kilometers in size. The city is most well known for the Torre Pendente, or as it is commonly known around the world – the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Built as the bell tower for the Duomo di Pisa in the twelfth century, the main cathedral in the city, the tower started to lean after completion because of the ground below. In 2001, a project was completed to keep the tower from leaning further, allowing individuals to enter, climb to the top, and enjoy a magnificent view.
Other sights to see in Pisa include the Piazza dei Cavalieri, the Museo di San Matteo (art and history museum), and the Museo del Opera del Duomo.
One of the most beautiful things to see in Pisa is the Luminara festival, held on June 16. As sunset hits, all the lights along the Amu are dimmed and over 10,000 candles are lit. The night ends with an amazing fireworks display.
The city of Pisa is serviced by the Pisa Galileo Galilei International Airport (PSA). This airport is located 3.75 kilometers from the city’s center. It is one of the two major airports located in the Tuscany region (aside from the Peretola Airport). The airport provides its services to a number of airlines, including Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, EasyJet, Iberia, Lufthansa, and Ryanair.
